    Description

First Battle of the Marne Commemorative Plaque. Stunningly executed by the artist Arthur Gangand, this gilded metal plaque measures 13¼" x 9¼" and is mounted to a thick piece of marble measuring 15½" x 12" via four rosette-head bolts. The plaque features a sepia portrait of General Joseph Joffre inset within an ornate integral frame in the upper left corner. In the lower left corner Joffre's September 6, 1914 order of the day is engraved in script: "Une troupe qui ne peut plus avancer devra, coûte que coûte, garder le terrain conquis et se faire tuer sur place plutôt que de reculer." Roughly translated it reads: "A troop which cannot advance any more will have to keep the conquered ground and be made to kill on the spot rather than to move back." The central portion of the plaque features crossed flags and a palm frond with a band captioned "Pro Patria". A metal bracket mounted to the reverse allows the plaque to be displayed easel style. The first battle of the Marne was fought between September 5th and 9th, 1914, and though the Allies ultimately won, over eighty thousand men were killed. Fine condition.
