    Description

Extraordinary WWI British Recruiting Poster "Sportsman Battalion's Recruit Who Wrecked the Zeppelin and Won the V.C.". 20" x 30". Printed by W. Straker Ltd., Piccadilly. The Sportsmen Battalion was a battalion comprised of men who had made their name in football, cricket, boxing, etc., an extension of the so-called "Pals" battalions. The daring pilot pictured on this poster is almost certainly William Leefe Robinson, the first British pilot to shoot down an airship over Britain during WWI. On September 3, 1916 Robinson shot down a German Schütte- Lanz type airship which crashed at Cuffley. Robinson was awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military award. The poster encourages men to "Follow His Lead and join the Sportsman's Battalion". The poster has been professionally mounted on this canvas to permanently preserve and strengthen it. There are some modest moisture stains at the lower left corner, a few tiny nicks, and a negligible area of loss at the extreme edge of the left margin. An evocative poster, rarely seen in this original form, in very good condition.
