Exceptional Polish Lancer Czapka, Circa 1880. Complete and in extraordinary condition this wonderful example features a black lacquered cloth body, leather visor, and distinctive four-sided trencher top. The top is held to the body via a threaded lug and wing-type nut. There is a band of red wool cloth around the base of the mortar board top, trimmed in gold braid and a matching red wool cloth band also runs along the base of the skull cap, likewise trimmed in gold braid. A white horse-hair plume is mounted to the left front quarter of the mortar board. A brass Polish eagle plate adorns the front of the helmet affixed by split pins. The brass chin scales are held to the helmet with conical brass bosses, perhaps later replacements. Half of the leather liner is absent but the overall condition of the helmet is excellent with some minor crazing to the visor and little additional wear.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
