Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I Signed Photograph in a Superb Imperial Presentation Frame. This ornate gilt-bronze frame measures approximately 7 ¼" x 11 ¾" and is surmounted with an enameled Austrian crown (lacking the top cross), red enameled "FJ" monograms in each upper corner and the enameled House of Hapsburg-Lorraine coat of arms in each lower corner. The frame is cast with raised borders, the outer borders ornately decorated. The studio portrait of the emperor features him standing in his uniform, festooned with medals, and with one hand resting on a book, the other holding his feather-bedecked hat. The Emperor's slightly faded signature appears at the bottom of the photograph. The image is protected by the original beveled glass. The reverse of the frame has two indecipherable hallmarks and the easel strut has separated from the hinge, an easy repair. These Imperial frames seldom come to market, and with the exception of the damage noted, this example is in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
