And They Struck Off A Medal For This? 25" x 19" Artist: unsigned. This lot features a poster that was printed by the Liberty Loan Committee to pluck the heartstrings of Americans. The poster depicts a woman holding a small child sinking to the bottom of the ocean, with a small bouquet of roses above the drawing. This drawing mimics the "Enlist" poster's graphic, which is extremely valuable and desired by collectors. Below this drawing is a text block explaining what the Germans gave a medal for, flanking this text is a drawing of one side of the medal itself. The Lusitania is the ship commemorated here, and its sinking was one of the major events which led the United States to enter the war. The Lusitania was a passenger craft, carrying no munitions, yet it was sent to the bottom of the sea along with 1198 people, including women and children. The medal struck off for this reads; "Keine Bannware. Der Grossdampfer -Lusitania- Durch Ein Deutsches Tauchboote Versenkt. 5 Mai 1915." (Translation:)"No Banned Goods; The Large Steamer -Lusitania- Sunk By A German Submarine. May 5th 1915." The interesting thing is, this medal was struck off two days before the actual sinking; showing complete premeditation on the Germans part. A fascinating bit of history; a must for any collection!

Condition- Fine; normal wear on edges from rolling/storage, finger prints and handling stains on lower left corner.
