    Description

WWI, 48-Star - U.S. 103rd Field Artillery Regiment, 26th Division Camp Color/Personal Flag. The 103rd Field Artillery was organized in 1917 from venerable units of the Rhode Island National Guard that can trace their lineage and honors back to the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery, an 1801 militia unit recruited from mariners and seafaring men.

This flag is a 28" X 55", cotton, 48-star, dye printed starfield, sewn stripe, finished with a cotton twill header and two grey metal war-time grommets. The flag is marked on the obverse hoist, "HQ C. 103 RGT FIELD ART. 26 YANKEE DIV. 1917-18" and "William H.S. McEwen." Stapled to the reverse hoist are three WWI insignias for privates of the infantry, a signals electrician, and a horseshoer, presumably connected to the donor. William McEwen was the father of Sgt. Arthur I. McEwen and the flag was donated to the Rungee Collection in his name.

Arthur served in the Headquarters Company of the 103rd Field Artillery, which arrived in France in September of 1917 as a component of the 26th Infantry Division called the "Yankee Division" because it was composed entirely of National Guard units from New England. It was the second to arrive for the American Expeditionary Force and, after training, they were rotated into the trenches near Chemin des Dames in February of 1918. In the spring, the division's sector was attacked and the artillery participated in a vigorous box barrage defense lasting 36 hours. The division was rotated out for rest then moved to the line at Chateau Thierry. They participated in the Aisne-Marne campaign offensive at Saint-Mihiel and the last major offensive of the war, Meuse-Argonne.

This personal camp flag of Sgt. Arthur McEwen is an opportunity for a WWII, 26th Division, 103rd F.A., or Rhode Island National Guard collector.

In WWI, the 26th Division was awarded the World War One Victory Medal with six campaign stars.

Condition: The flag is in good condition. It is used, worn and soiled with two small tears, but otherwise complete.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
