    Description

World War I Uncle Sam Patriotic Poster by James Montgomery Flagg, 1917. It measures 29.5" x 40". Printed for the United States Army. This poster is likely one of the most popular cultural icons our nation has seen. The poster is simple in its message and imagery. Flagg drew his inspiration from several sources; the 1916 Lord Kitchener poster published by David Allen & Sons, London, which depicts Lord Kitchener pointing his finger in the same forceful way and calling on Britons to enlist. Secondly, Uncle Sam, who became a national symbol for patriotic participation, was modeled on a self-portrait of Flagg himself. This image originally appeared on the cover of Leslie Magazine, for which Flagg worked as an illustrator. It appeared on the July 6th, 1916 cover, saying "What are you doing for preparedness?" It did not appear with its, "I Want You" text until February 15th, 1917.

This example is linen backed and has nearly the same boldness to the color as the day it was made. Professional restoration has eliminated some damp stains and fold marks. There are small, scattered areas of abrasion/loss which have been filled in/restored. We detect a 3.5" closed tear in the bottom left. The faults are minor and only apparent upon close examination. The poster hung for many years in an American Legion hall. No collection should be without this cultural icon.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
