Wonderful Late 18th Early 19th Century Carved American Powder Horn. 13" overall, probably New York or New England. Original rounded wooden butt with large iron staple and what appears to be a carved name, attached with a number of small iron brads. Great old 2 1/2" X 1/2" repair along the bottom edge utilizing a piece of tin held in place with small rose head nails. 3/8" wide leather thong attached to staple where it was apparently suspended from a rifle/hunting bag. Carving features a primitive spread wing eagle surmounting a crown, doubtless symbolizing America's victory over England. Vine and leaf motif with two sets of initials AM and IM. Crescent moon with with face and figure seated under tree with a small animal approaching on a path and an Indian with head dress, longarm, powder horn and long knife. Great figure of a bare breasted mermaid holding a chalice in one hand and running a comb through her hair with the other. Spout with some carved decoration and relief carved 1/2" wide ring 2 1/2" from tip. Wonderful age patina overall with just some very minor deterioration along the base, negligible. A symbolically important American horn with great 'folk art' character, totally untouched.
