Vintage Cavalry Jacket with Maryland Association This well worn example of the standard cavalry shell jacket is just as outlined in the U. S. regulations of 1861. The coat is fully trimmed in yellow worsted tape and is complete with its "pillows" at the back to support the sword belt along with twelve small general service buttons down the front. Three "GAR" buttons and a staff officers button have replaced the originals both at the cuffs and on the collar. The exterior of the coat is in near excellent condition with only a few minor moth holes, but the collar shows extensive wear with sections of the trim torn or missing and much of the cloth beyond the trim replaced. The white woolen interior lining shows overall wear with many frayed areas. One sleeve is marked with a size number "3" and the other with the rectangular stamp of the contractor "JOHN BOYL[AN]/ NEWARK, N[J]." who produced about 20,000 cavalry jackets for the government in 1863 and 64. Each sleeve also has a clear 19th Century stamp in an oval cartouche "MILLER/PHILA." above what appears to be the word "costumer." This word has been crossed out and the name "J. FORSYTH" written above in period brown ink. This jacket was obtained by the consignor in 1973 directly from the grandson of Pvt. Joseph L. Forsyth, who served in Co. L of Maryland's 1st Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry from April, 1864 to June, 1865. The grandson subsequently wore Pvt. Forsyth's jacket in the earliest Civil War reenactments and also during the first Custer reenactments at the Little Big Horn, no doubt accounting for much of the wear. A letter of provenance from the consignor accompanies the piece. A classic jacket with an intriguing Maryland connection.Auction Info
