    Description

Very Nice Percussion Full Stock Huntington County Pennsylvania Percussion Rifle by J. Douglass, Circa 1850. 42", .45 caliber, smoothbore octagonal barrel, 15/16" across the flats. The barrel length would tend to indicate this is one of Douglass's earlier rifles. German silver blade front sight, iron V notch rear. Signed in die stamped block letters on the top flat, 7" from the breech, "J. Douglass". Barrel with nice smooth dark patina, just some minor pitting around the nipple. All brass furniture, typical of Huntington County, with very slender trigger guard, patchbox finial with pierced heart and lid deeply engraved with floral/ scroll motifs. The lid has a lip that extends over the edge of the butt plate to effect release. The single screw lock bolt plate is script engraved "McConnells t". Silver embryonic bird inlaid on the cheek piece. Missing the front ramrod ferrule, else furniture fine. Double set triggers. The lock looks fine, and functions perfectly, but is probably a correct replacement. Plain maple stock retains about 50% of the original artificially applied grain. Fine with nice patina and just one old repair to a minor chip at the toe of the butt, and small slivers to the rear of the lock and next to the double screw tang. A nice Pennsylvania rifle by what was probably Huntington County's finest maker of this period.
