    Description

Very Nice Civil War M1859 McClellan Saddle with Accouterments Excellent example of this widely used Civil War cavalry saddle. Original "Allegheny / U.S. / Arsenal 1864" brass tag affixed at the rear with small brads. Saddle shield with "11 1/2" SEAT". The original thick harness leather skirts, a bit dry and age cracked, but sound, are affixed with iron screws. The wooden stirrups are covered with leather hoods and employ a steel strap device for support. The stirrup straps are old correct replacements. The saddle is nicely outfitted with an original crupper and carbine socket. The original M1859 blue wool girth is also present. Included is a M1863 artillery curb bit with reins, inspected and marked US twice, with brass face and intertwined USA integral with the bit. Also includes a very fine set of US M1859 saddle bags complete with all original straps. Added to the front pommel edge edge is brass trim which was likely applied after the war, but while the saddle was still in military service. Overall a very nice example of this iconic saddle and a specimen that likely saw considerable service.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
