    Very Fine, Nicely Marked, Brass Scabbard, Thomas Griswold & Co., New Orleans, Confederate Cavalry Officer's Saber Identified to Col. William E. DeMoss 10th Tennessee Cavalry 34 1/2" curved blade very fine with dark undisturbed patina and scattered surface rust. Deeply die stamped in the reverse ricasso "T. G. & Co N.O.". Hilt of regulation form with cast decoration on the quillon, inside and outside of both outboard branches, face of pommel cap and scrollwork with floral rosette where the guard enters the pommel. Hilt overall about perfect with nice untouched patina. Brown leather wrapped grip with tight twisted brass wire wrap also about perfect. The all brass scabbard with large accentuated drag, excellent with fine deep patina. An exceptional example of this very scarce and desirable maker marked Confederate saber.
    Included with the sword are; 738 page leather bound song book inscribed "Wm E. Demoss Book Nov 15, 1849", covers detached. Letter to Col DeMoss dated 9/13/1863 concerning a financial claim. United Daughters of the Confederacy certificate to Betty Harding Lazar listing her descendant as William Eldridge DeMoss 10th Cavalry, Tennessee, C.S.A.. Late 19th century correspondence and receipts relating to the Harding family of Nashville. Newspaper listing the estate sale where the sword was sold dated 10/20/2011. Family history of the DeMoss and Harding families. Col. DeMoss' daughter, Caroline, married George Harding, in who's family the sword descended. Letter dated 11/12/2011 from the owner of the estate liquidator attesting to the swords provenance in the Harding and DeMoss families.
    William Eldridge DeMoss of Davidson County Tennessee enlisted on 6/1/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company A 20th TN Infantry, promoted to Captain 1862, resigned for reasons of health. Re-enlisted 2/25/1863 as Major in the Field & Staff of the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, promoted to Lieut Col 1863, Colonel 1864. Captured at Tifton Georgia and held prisoner at Johnson's Island.
