    USS William R. Rush (DD-714).
USS William R. Rush (DD-714) was a Gearing-class destroyer in the United States Navy, the second ship in the US navy to bear the name. She was launched 8 July 1945 and never saw combat in WWII.

The ensign of the USS William R. Rush is a US Navy Ensign #9 42" X 63" bunting flag with sewn star & stripes finished with two gray metal wartime grommets. The flag is marked on the lower obverse, "USS WR Rush DD-714" and the reverse hoist "US ENS."

The Rush was named for Captain William R. Rush who, as captain of the USS Florida (BB-30), was given command of the Naval Infantry Brigade that was sent ashore at Veracruz during the landings there in April 1914. Rush led the brigade ashore and met heavy resistance during which Rush was wounded, but continued to direct the efforts of his brigade. For his conduct during the landings, Capt. Rush was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Although untested during WWII, the Rush did see action in Korea, Vietnam and served with NATO ships until 1978 when she was transferred to the South Korean Navy and rechristened ROKS Kang Won (DD-922).

WWII Awards: American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Condition: Good - the flag is used, worn and soiled with a small tear in the lower fly corner.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information, along with a 1951 letter of authentication and transmittal from H. S. Hamlin, Jr., commanding officer of the Rush.

For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.
