    Description

The Sixth Most Successful Sub of WWII

    USS Seahorse (SS-304).
USS Seahorse (SS-304), a Balao-class submarine, commissioned in 1943, was the first submarine and second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the seahorse, a small fish whose head and body suggest the head and neck of a horse. Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, known as Neptune to the Romans, is said to have traveled in a chariot drawn by fierce seahorses. The Seahorse was one of the most successful U.S. submarines of WWII.

The ensign of the Seahorse is an approximately 32" X 58" bunting, 48-star, double appliqué, sewn stripe flag finished with a header and grommets. The flag is marked on the upper obverse hoist "SS Seahorse (SS304) Clean Sweep 1944 20 Kills." The clean sweep is a reference to her first six war patrols where she "swept" the enemy from the seas.

The Seahorse had eight successful war patrols during WWII. Her duties were mostly attacking enemy shipping, but she also served as a lifeguard ship for downed pilots during air assaults. Her kill flag boasts twenty-three kills (twenty merchantmen and three warships) and three ships damaged. However, the Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee (JANAC) officially credited her with 20 kills for a total of 75,529 tons ... the sixth most successful by number of ships sunk and the twelfth by tonnage. This ensign would be a welcome addition to any WWII, War in the Pacific and submarine collection.

During WWII the USS Seahorse was awarded the: Navy Presidential Unit Citation with two stars; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine campaign stars and the World War II Victory Medal.

The ensign of the Seahorse is in Good Condition - it is used, worn, soiled and stained, but otherwise complete.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.

For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
