    Description

    USS Pasadena (CL-65).
USS Pasadena (CL-65), a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy, was the second vessel to carry the name of the city that is known for hosting the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl. She was launched in 1943 and commissioned in 1944.

The ensign of the Pasadena is a 48-star 53" X 89" Annin-Defiance brand cotton bunting flag with embroidered stars and sewn stripes, finished with a canvas header and two brass grommets. The flag is marked, "USS Pasadena 1943" and, on the reverse, "Tom Yam - 43."

The Pasadena arrived in the Pacific in time to participate in the later stages of the war. Assigned to a fast carrier force, she attacked Luzon and Formosa in support of the Philippine campaign, and then into the South China Sea to attack of the coast of Indo-China. Next, she bombarded Iwo Jima before going on to do the same for the Japanese home islands of Honshu, and Hokkaido in preparation for the anticipated invasion of Japan. However, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki compelled the Japanese to surrender. She was in Tokyo Bay for the surrender and then participated in occupation duties. This flag would be appropriate for a collector of WWII, the War in the Pacific and cruiser artifacts.

The WWII awards of the Pasadena are the Navy Combat Action Ribbon; China Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal with five campaign stars; World War II Victory Medal; Navy WWII Occupation Medal with ASIA Clasp; Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and Philippine Liberation Medal.

The flag is in Good condition - used, worn and soiled, but otherwise intact.

Provenance: USS Pasadena; Tom Yam, father of crewman.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
