U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Officer's Saber Inscribed to Ordnance Sergeant Elijah Ewing 12th Independent Battery New York Light Artillery The sword is in wonderful untouched condition. The blade is in excellent condition with the obverse etch on a panel including spread wing eagle, motto and scroll work. The reverse etch on panel of scroll work centered with "U.S.". Ricasso marked "P.D.L." Regulation style hilt excellent with original gilt in evident in protected areas. Fish skin grip perfect with springlike wire flanked by double strand wire. Bright steel scabbard with a few areas of dark patina, no dents. Displayed above the top ring mount is an applied silver shield finely engraved "Presented to E. Ewing Ord Serg't by Battery No 12 N.Y.S.V. Aug 9th 1862".
Elijah Ewing enlisted on Dec. 16, 1861 as a 1st sergeant, 12th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery for a term of three years. He resigned his rank of sergeant on Nov. 21, 1862 and continued his military service as a private, mustering out on Dec 16, 1864.
Included with the sword is a file of copies of Ewing's muster rolls and pension records.
