US M1842 .69 Caliber Cartridge Box with original white buff sling, both plates, identified to Frank H. Liscum, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry. Superb overall condition. White buff sling as sound as supple as new, with some scattered spotting and one larger stain at the top. Should be carefully cleaned. Original eagle cross belt plate marked "W. H. Smith / Brooklyn" on back about perfect. Box also really excellent with some minor surface crazing on right side of front flap, but overall supple, sound and absolutely no flaking. Box nicely marked on inside flap "H. A. Dingee / New York". Interior of the box about mint with the original tins. Sling buckles with 99% of the original black lacquer. US oval box plate about perfect with nice patina. Liscum's last name is written in period pencil script on the back of the box. Liscum enlisted 4/27/61 in Co. C, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry and mustered out 6/28/64. He was wounded at Gainesville, Va. Promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant, he rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 10/21/64, meaning, of course, that this box would have been used by him between 4/27/61 and 10/21/61. Choice example of this scarce and desirable regulation US issue cartridge box with nice ID.
