United States Naval Academy: Class of 1861 Photograph Album. 7" x 8.5" leather bound photograph album, gold-stamped on the cover "Class of 1861/ U. S. Naval Academy" and gold-stamped on the spine "Photographs/ Class of '61/ F. Rodgers". The title page is signed "Fredek. Rodgers", a member of the graduating class. We include a photocopy of G.A.R. "Memorial Resolutions on the Death of Comrade Frederick Rodgers Rear Admiral U.S.N." Rodgers had a long and distinguished career. During the Civil War, he served in several blockading squadrons, escorting prize vessels back to Union ports and participating in the assault on Port Hudson. The photographs in the book were taken by J. L. Lovell of Amherst, Massachusetts and include images of buildings at Annapolis, members of the faculty, members of the graduating class (with notations indicating fatalities in the war), ships and group shots. These are not mounted albumens, but full page photographs bound together. We count 47 photographs, separated by blank paper barriers. Many of these men served in the Civil War. One sailor whose name caught our attention was W. F. Sampson. He is most famous as an Admiral in the Spanish-American War, often linked with Admiral George Dewey. The pages are gilt-edged. The front cover is fully detached. There is wear to the corners and ribbed spine. The contents are in excellent condition. Please view the on-line description that includes an assortment of sample photos.
