    Union Soldier's Letter Home. Three and a quarter pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8"; Washington, D.C.; May 23, no year. A letter from Tom Brigham of the 1st Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers to his family sending news that they are getting ready to march. In part: "I write to [you] on this occasion because we have Orders tonight to have our knapsacks in in readiness to morrow. We shall start to morrow according to orders. We do not know our place of destination it was only known about 9 this evening at 9 ½ we have Roll call. It was given on at that time, every company on the ground give 3 Harty cheers for the order to morrow and ours was as loud as any of them I can asshure you. For I gave the command... We now expect to go to battle. I did when I left New Britain. I knew it was no Boys play. The fact is Father I should have been an expense to you this summer if I had stayed home nothing doing. I know you do not care anything about that. But you would not like to see the only son you have got sneaking around home when Uncle Sam says Boys I want you..."

    The letter is accompanied by the original transmittal cover, which has been free franked by a member of Congress.

    Condition: Letter has usual mail folds, with small separations occurring at the margins. Small chip of paper loss at top. Light toning and stray ink stains. Cover has heavy toning and small bit of paper loss at the bottom. Cover has been sliced open at the top.
