    Description

The United States Army Headquarters Flags of Lt. Gen. John McAllister Schofield, Commanding General from 1888 to 1895. These magnificent flags were acquired by the consignor from the estate of Stuart Andrews, Schofield's great grandson, who inherited them from his mother, Avery Delano Andrews, Schofield's granddaughter. Schofield compiled a distinguished record during the Civil War, being promoted to Brigadier General November 21, 1861 and Major General November 29, 1862. He subsequently served as Andrew Johnson's Secretary of War 1868-1869 and, in 1873, was given the secret task of determining the potential strategic importance of the Hawaiian Islands to United States military interests. Schofield Barracks in Hawaii now bears his name. From 1888 until his retirement in late 1895, Schofield served as the Commanding General of the United States Army, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General February 5, 1895. These flags were doubtless those in his possession upon his retirement. The bodies of both flags are constructed entirely of silk. The U.S. colors are 80" x 74" and the United States Army Headquarters flag is 80" x 76". All embellishments are of the heaviest, and most exquisite quality, silk embroidery we've ever seen on a U.S. military standard from any period. As can be seen in the photographs, the silk is fragile with some breaks/ cracking, but both flags are at least 98% complete and still quite sound, with brilliant colors. Both flags are accompanied by their original 131", two piece, brass bound ebony staffs. Also included is one of the very heavy, full bodied, gilt brass, eagle pole tops, also the finest quality and most impressive we've ever seen. The 45 star flag remained in service until 1908, with these standards being regulation through the Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection. An historically important and visually stunning set of U.S. military flags.
