    Description

Thai and Nationalist Chinese Swords presented to Gen. Nathan F. Twining, Chairman of the JCS from 1957 - 1960. Nathan Farragut Twining graduated from West Point in 1918, transferring to the Army Air Service four years later. He commanded the 13th and 15th Air Forces during WW II, and in 1953 became Commanding General of the US Air Force. In 1957 he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by Eisenhower, the first Air Force officer to hold the position. Twining remained chairman until his retirement in 1960.

The first sword is a Thai Dha which bears the following inscription on the blade "From: General Thanom Kittikachorn/ To: General Nathan F. Twining/ Oct. 1957" The sword is in mint condition with the elaborate hilt mounts being covered with sheet gold. The 22¼" blade with inlaid gilt decoration for its entire length. The grip is wrapped entirely in woven hair. The scabbard of the sword is covered in blue velvet, the mounts of silver gilt with niello finish. The woven silk cord is attached at a ring at the throat and a silver ring midway between the middle and lower mounts. The bottom of the lower mount is inlaid with an elephant surrounded by scroll work in silver gilt.

The second sword is presented to Twining by the Nationalist Chinese Chief of Staff, apparently on the same trip that took him to Thailand. The presentation is inscribed on the scabbard between the mounts in Chinese. The sword is mounted entirely in gilt brass and appears to be of Japanese manufacture. The 27" blade with wavy frosted hamon along the edge. The hilt basket is pierced with an eagle and floral rosettes. Dolphin head quillon and the knuckle bow terminates in a dolphin head where it enters the pommel. The backstrap is an eagle with delineated feathers, the eagles head and beak forming the pommel. Blue and white enameled Nationalist Chinese rosettes attached on both sides of the pommel. The tang is overlaid with a floral rosette. White sharkskin grip perfect, just a few strands of the brass wire wrap are loose, else the sword is mint in every respect. The nickeled steel scabbard with engraved brass mounts employs rope knots on the ring mounts, and a dolphin head as the drag.

A beautiful pair of swords that will only increase in value and historic importance over the coming years.
