Superb and Complete Cavalryman's Hardee Hat Undoubtedly this is one of the nicest examples of the sturdy and imposing Pattern 1858 Army Hat to be available on the collectors market in many years. This example is trimmed to denote a member of Company C, 2nd Regiment of cavalry, with a 1"brass numeral "2" and company letter "C" flanking an original crossed saber badge. The 3" wide brim retains its two rows of stitching reinforcement and is looped up with the familiar stamped brass "eagle" device. Original worsted yellow hat cords are set at the base of the 6" tall crown. The overall condition is superlative and the black felt body is exceptionally sound and without blemish. There is only one inconsequential nick in the brim. The interior is unlined, as correct, and the glazed top is clearly stenciled with a riband marked "U.S. ARMY" beneath which is an eagle design under which is "EXTRA/MANUFACTURE" and a small size number "3." Only the tall sweatband is missing. For condition and eye appeal, this remarkable hat would be difficult to match.
