Steam Gauge Recovered From the Wreck of the Famed USS Kearsarge, Victor in the Battle Against the Confederate Commerce Raider CSS Alabama, June 19, 1864. The USS Kearsarge was a Mohican-class sloop-of-war launched on September 11, 1861. She is best known for her action against the Confederate raider CSS Alabama in an epic battle off the coast of Cherbourg, France. She continued her service long after the war, operating in both Pacific waters as well as in Caribbean waters. She came to an inglorious end at Roncador Cay off the coast of Central America in 1894. Though Congress appropriated $45,000 to tow her home, the salvage team, Boston Towboat Company, found she could not be refloated. A very few artifacts were salvaged and returned to the United States. Many of these artifacts found their way to the famous Francis Bannerman's in New York. An ad from a 1940s-era edition of their catalog has a brief listing for "Steam Gauge, from wreck of the U.S.S.Kearsarge in the Samoa Island Purchased from the captain of the wreckers...Price $20.00". The brass gauge measures 10.5" in diameter and the face is marked "American Steam Gauge Co." and stamped "T. W. Lane / STEAM GAUGE / 169784". Included with this historic gauge is a September 2013 copy of Sea Classics magazine which contains a story by Marshall Brown titled "Amazing Artifact From the Civil War's Famed USS Kearsarge", in which the story of steam gauge is recounted in some detail. A wonderful artifact brimming with history.
