    Spanish-American War, USS New Orleans Archive, 1898. The archive chronicles the activities of the USS New Orleans in the preliminary blockade of Spain's "Caribbean Squadron" at Santiago de Cuba and subsequent naval combat at San Juan, Porto Rico during the Spanish American War. Included are: the nautical chart, and original metal tube, used by the captain of the New Orleans during the United States naval blockade at Santiago de Cuba of the Spanish Navy's First Squadron commanded by Vice Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete; an original pen and ink drawing of the USS New Orleans, June 9th, 1898 (10" x 7.75"); an original pen and ink drawing of the bombardment of Santiago de Cuba June 6, 1898, by the USS New Orleans, Iowa, Texas, Massachusetts, Oregon, New York, Brooklyn, Dixie, Dolphin, and Marblehead (13.5" x 8.5"); an original pen and ink drawing of the arrival of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's North Atlantic Squadron to reinforce the Flying Squadron commanded by Commodore Winfield S. Schley, Santiago de Cuba, June 1, 1898 (10" x 8"); and, an original pen and ink drawing of the "July 16th Sinking of Spanish troop ship off San Juan, Porto Rico by USS New Orleans", the New Orleans sank the Spanish blockade runner Antonio Lopez, a converted passenger liner, (10" x 8"). The chart is 25.25" x 19.5" and split down the center. The metal tube for the chart is 9" long, 1.75" in diameter, and painted naval gray. Considerable ink staining and plotting marks on the chart. Drawings are in very fine condition.
