    Description

Spanish American War: Florida Convention Poster. 8 1/2" x 27" poster, handsomely double-matted and framed, issued to promote the "National Military Convention in the Casino of the Tampa Bay Hotel, Tampa, Fla., Feb. 8, 1899." The central figure is a standing infantry soldier with a Springfield trap-door rifle. Tampa was a staging ground for troops that deployed to Cuba in the Spanish-American War. The publisher of the poster was the Plant System of railroads, steamships and hotels. William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Joe Wheeler were all invited to this event, but we don't know if they were able to make it. Horizontal folds, scattered small stains, not examined out of frame.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
