    Spanish-American War Dewey Medal Named to Landsman Otto Hearik Who Served Aboard the USS Olympia During the Battle of Manila, 1898. 67.8 grams (2.39 ounces), 46.25 mm in diameter. The rim stamped "HEARIK OTTO LANDSMAN". The obverse features a profile bust of Commodore George Dewey and the inscription "THE GIFT OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE ASIATIC SQUADRON UNDER THE COMMAND OF COMMODORE GEORGE DEWEY". The reverse displays a shirtless sailor sitting on a cannon barrel and the caption "IN MEMORY OF THE VICTORY OF MANILA BAY MAY 1 1898". The ship name "U.S.S. Olympia", on which Hearik served, is stamped on a blank just below the sailor's feet. The Dewey Medal was created to recognize the forces of the U.S. Navy and United States Marine Corps who participated in the Battle of Manila Bay. To be awarded the Dewey Medal, a service member must have served on one of nine naval vessels on May 1, 1898. The medal was designed by Daniel Chester French and struck by Tiffany & Company and was a one-time issue, considered to be a commemorative medal.

    Condition: Excellent. Retaining nearly all the gilding. Lacks the original ribbon.
