Soldier's Letter Describes the Monitor This four-page letter from Pvt. Jonathan Clayton, Co. C, 104th Pa. Vol. Inf. was written on April 6, 1862 while at Newport News, Va. It includes an interesting description of the ironclad Monitor about a month after the ship's March 9, 1862 historic encounter with the Merrimac. Along with the usual camp news and rumors of looming battles, Clayton writes: "When/I wrote the other I forgot to tell you/about seeing the Monitor, the vessel that/wipped the Rebel Merrimac , which/sunk two of our vessels, some/time back. All you can see of her above/the water is a concern the shape of/chease box, about ten or twelve feet in/Diameter, which her guns work in,/there was one man standing on her/with a glass who appeared to be waching/the mouth of the James river."The letter is three full pages, well written in an easily read hand and filled with the typical thoughts of the common soldier. A colorful first-person description of an icon of American History.
