    Description

Sergeant Travis Hensley of the 13th Texas Cavalry Battalion Grouping of Ten Letters and Related Papers. Ten complete letters from Hensley to his wife, Julia; writing from various locations and dated January 6, 1861 through September 16, 1863. Although Texas does not secede until March 5, Hensley's first letter is dated January 16, 1861, and already makes reference to sending troops: "The detachment from Ed's company has not yet returned... There is some probability that all the Texas troops will be ordered to Virginia or Kentucky in the Spring..." The letters vary in length, and many are from locations in Texas. In a letter from Brownsville dated April 3, 1862, Hensley writes: "In the hospitals are hundreds of wounded soldiers many of whom can never recover, but who seem to think dying a small matter... The prisoners able to work... are under strong guard engaged in repairing the buildings, which they have knocked down." In a 3 page letter from "Camp Atchafalaya, La. August 28th 1863", he writes: "The enemy are massing troops and making some preparations near Biloxi and in other places which seem to threaten Mobile, and I fear calamities are in store for us... I do not think we are well prepared there. I saw a gentleman last evening direct from New Orleans who says that it is certainly the intention of the enemy to attack Mobile very soon and that they are making immense preparations... The whole of Sibley's Old Brigade, now Green's Brigade, is encamped near us." The letter also makes mention of talk of an alliance between Russia and the United States and bemoans that neither France or England have recognized the Confederate States.

The grouping includes two additional incomplete letters from Hensley to his wife; twelve letters to Hensley from his wife; two letters to Hensley, two letters to Hensley wife from friends, and a certificate from the Dallas chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy issued to Mrs. Travis Hensley.

Condition: Condition varies, with most being good to very good. Many of the original transmittal envelopes are present.
