    Section of Rope Purportedly Used to Hang Captain Henry Wirz, Commandant of Andersonville Prison.
    A 2-inch section of hemp rope (1/2-inch in diameter), housed in a small finger-jointed Balsa wood box with sliding lid. A small contemporary label on the lid is captioned "Wirtz [sic] / relic from". Henry Wirz (1823-1865) was commandant of the infamous Confederate prison Camp Sumner, better known as Andersonville. Approximately 45,000 Union prisoners were housed in the prison during its 14 month existence, of which 28% died. Wirz was captured after the war, tried and convicted to death. He was hung in Washington D. C. on November 10, 1865.
