Wonderful Large, Scrimshaw Carved American Powder Horn, Dated 1760. 12" overall incorporating curve. Chip carved step down 3¾" from the spout, with a chip carved relief ring 1½" from the spout. Beautifully carved in elaborate, shaded, 1" high letters, the entire length of the horn, "Thomas White his horn" with the vertical date after the word his "1760". Also the date 1759 is pinpricked vertically below the word "his." There is geometric carving along the base and at the step down. The carving at the base appears to be by the same hand as the 1759 date, while the remainder of the carving, including the 1760 date, appears to be the work of a different, far more skilled, hand. There is some chipping/ cracking along the base, and the wooden plug is clearly a later replacement, however, there is no question the horn has not been shortened as the original holes/ pins for the base plug are clearly evident. Wonderful untouched patina, showing smooth wear on the underside from being carried/ used. A most appealing, and unquestionably authentic, French and Indian War period carved American powder horn.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
