Very Rare, Superb Condition Spanish .75 Caliber Smoothbore Flintlock Cavalry/ Dragoon Pistol, Circa 1750. 19.25" overall with 11.5" octagon to round barrel. Marked with the number "76" on top of the breech and crown over F on the lock. All brass furniture, including elaborate side plate and wrist escutcheon, which bears the hand engraved letter "R". The screws affixing the butt cap and rear trigger guard extension are also of brass. All metal with deep dark untouched patina, very fine with absolutely no rust or pitting, really exceptional. Brass furniture perfect with nice patina under an old coat of varnish. Wood also shows dark patina under an old coat of varnish. The lock and lock bolt plate are both mounted on relief carved panels and there is heavy relief carved decoration at both the barrel tang and the rear ramrod pipe. There is a sliver on the left side of the forestock, and two line cracks on the right side of the forestock that show very old, well done repairs with a wood filler, really detract little. Incised line forestock molding, the forestock extending to within 1" of the muzzle, which appears to be the original length. Just one small chip at the front of the lock. A very rare mid-eighteenth century European martial pistol, that could easily have seen service in the American Revolution, in really wonderful condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
