Very Fine Quality, German, Relief-Carved Side by Side Flintlock Rifle Shotgun, Circa 1780. Side by side 28.5" octagonal barrels with patent breech, the right side a .65 caliber rifle, the left side a 20 gauge shotgun. Deeply rifled .65 caliber bore about perfect. Inlaid in silver script on the top of the left barrel at the breech "Grosmann" and on the right "A Giessen" surrounded by silver inlaid scroll decoration. Intricately engraved rear sight and silver blade front sight. All metal smooth with nice brown patina, untouched, near mint. All brass furniture including 1.5" wide trigger guard beautifully engraved with scroll motifs and arms panoplies. The trigger guard, butt plate extension and 3" toe plate terminating in flame-like scrolls. The walnut stock heavily and deeply relief carved at tang, rear ramrod pipe, trigger guard extensions and cheekpiece with superbly executed floral and scroll motifs. Locks set on relief carved panels. Silver wedge escutcheons and silver wrist escutcheon with script engraved "F". The stock and brass furniture are both near mint, with nice rich patina. Missing the wooden patchbox lid, easily replaced. The slightly convex locks are marked "Grosmann" on the right and "A. Giessen" on the left. The right side hammer is broken off at the tumbler but included with the gun, the left side hammer is a period replacement. Although fitting the gun well it is of noticeably inferior quality to the original right side hammer. Brass ramrod ferrule with sling swivel, opposing swivel on the bottom of the butt stock. Original wooden ramrod with horn tip, with long iron ferrule at the based threaded to accept attachments. A magnificent gun, in wonderful condition, and clearly worthy of the minimal restoration required to return it to its original configuration.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
