Unusual Form, Fine Condition 18th Century Flintlock Holster Pistol. 14¼" overall with 8 5/8" smooth bore, approximately .60 caliber barrel. The metal parts of the gun are unquestionably European and show a quality that is well beyond the workmanship exhibited on the stock, implying the strong possibility that the gun was assembled from earlier parts and stocked in America. The barrel displays scroll engraving at the breech along with deeply struck European proofs, probably English. The barrel is octagonal for 1¼" at the breech, then multifaceted for 1 1/8", then stepped down to round for 1¼" with scroll engraving, then stepped down again to the muzzle. The gun exhibits the early detail of the tang being fastened by a screw from the underside. The convex face roller frizzen lock is curved across the bottom with scroll engraving on the hammer and the plate. The trigger guard with elaborate finial is simply screw fastened to the stock rather than being inletted. Single iron ramrod ferrule. All metal smooth and gray with just some scattered salt and peppering. The pin fastened walnut stock has a smooth age patina, with the butt carved to fit the hand, and does not utilize a butt cap. The ramrod is a replacement, otherwise the gun is complete and original in every respect. An interesting 18th century pistol with strong indications that it was stocked and assembled in this country.
