Two Eighteenth Century Hand-Forged Belt Axes. The first is a conventional form with 4½" head and 3" curved blade that was fabricated by folding a single strip of iron to form a hole for the haft, and then forging the blade. Rather crude but very sturdy and functional, with what appear to be the letters "IS" engraved on the obverse face of the blade. Deep dark patina showing its great age and signs of use, retaining the original oak haft.

The other is a most unusual form being a small "goosewing." Also entirely hand forged, 4½" overall with a flattened rear face for use as a hammer, and a 4½" blade. The first example of this form we've seen. Deep dark smooth patina overall, the maple haft is a replacement. Scarce, and one of the basic tools of the American frontiersman in the 18th century.
