Revolutionary War: "The Repeal, Or the Funeral Procession of
Miss Americ-Stamp" Important Repeal of the Stamp Act Cartoon.
14" x 10" [sight] engraved cartoon, double-matted and framed to an
overall size of 20" x 16". Titled: "The Repeal. Or the Funeral
Procession of Miss Americ-Stamp." Published on March 18, 1766, the
day the dreaded act ("Duties in American Colonies Act 1765") was
repealed. Drawn by Benjamin Wilson (1721-1788), commissioned by the
Marques of Rockingham to draw this and a companion cartoon, titled
"The Tombstone". A lengthy caption below the title identifies all
the participants and points of interest. The priests and mourners
are all supporters of the Stamp Act. The sad scene is contrasted
with the depiction of wharves and warehouses in the background and
ships being loaded with goods bound for the colonies, originating
from key manufacturing centers. "Among these is a large case
containing the statue of Mr. Pitt which is heaving on board a boat
No. 250, there is another boat taking in goods nearer the first
Rates [Conway, Rockingham, Grafton] which is No. 105. Those numbers
will ever be held in esteem by the true SONS of LIBERTY." American
opposition to the Stamp Act, coupled with pressure exerted by
sympathetic British politicians, was a significant event leading up
to the Revolution. Great condition.
