Revolutionary War: Battle of Stony Point Panoramic Watercolor. Group of six watercolors on laid paper, each measuring 9" x 13.75", mounted on folding linen backing and bound in a custom portfolio-style book titled "Verplank Point Camp". A caption slip on the inside cover reads: "Verplank Point. Site of the battle of, with a view of the American and British Encampments." The watercolors can be extended and fully opened to display a panoramic view of the terrain and encampments. The artworks are not signed. The Battle of Stony Point took place on July 16, 1779. It was a victory by "Mad Anthony" Wayne over his British counterpart, Henry Johnson, who was taken prisoner along with 546 of his troops. It secured Stony Point and Verplank Point, on opposite sides of the Hudson, a key crossing site later used by the Americans in successful operations against the British.

These panoramic watercolors were found among the papers of Thomas Digges, who was related to the prominent Carroll family of Maryland by marriage. Thus far our research has failed to uncover the connection of the family to this particular battle, but Revolutionary War sketches rarely appear at auction. The presentation is both appealing and executed to museum standards.
