Magnificent 18th Century Italian Snaphaunce Belt Pistol. An absolutely remarkable example of the gunmaker's art. 13½" overall with 7 3/8" .55 caliber smoothbore octagon to round barrel signed "LAZARINO COMINAZZO" on the top flat. Superb condition, with all metal bright and clean. All steel mounts with chiseled buttcap, elaborately pierced side plate and tang/ wrist inlay, which is all highlighted with exquisitely executed engraving. Trigger guard bow chiseled while the finial exhibits five piercings with decorative engraving. Ribbed steel nose cap and long engraved tail on the lower ramrod pipe. The lock is truly a work of art. The frizzen is mounted on the full figured form of a female, which extends into a grotesque mask where it rolls on the spring. Sliding pan cover with a gargoyle head. The hammer heavily chiseled with a mask on the face of the hammer as well as overlaid on the hammer screw. A deep relief mask at the tail of the lock amid elaborate chaising, and a small mask on the underside of the pan. Wood excellent with deep relief carving around the ramrod channel as well as around the lock and side plate. A 4" steel belt hook is affixed to the left side. The gun is complete and original in every respect with absolutely no repairs or restoration. An important European pistol in superb condition.
