Important Carved French and Indian War Map Powder Horn Named to David Clayton, 1761. This absolutely stunning horn features a map of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers from New York to "Monteroyal" [sic]. The front of the powder horn displays the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom as used by King George I and the succeeding Hanoverian kings with the King's German domains noted in the fourth quarter of the arms. Below the Royal Arms are a trophy of arms and the skyline of the city of New York as it appeared in the year 1761. Above the unicorn supporter is the name "David Clayton" and the date "1761". The map shows towns, forts, and individual farms up and down the rivers. Sites identified on the Hudson River are Fort Stillwater, Fort Saratoga, the farm of I. Miller, and Fort Edward. The places on the Mohawk River are, starting at Fort Half Moon [Helf Moon], Schenectady [Schenacedy], Fort Hunter, Fort Sir William Johnson [S. W. JohnSons], German Flatts, Fort Herkimer [Harkman], and Fort Stanwix. The map also shows Lake Oneida [Onyda], Wood Creek, Tres River, Lake Ontario, Lake George, Lake Champlain, Lake France, and the St. Lawrence River [River S. Lorans]. Other fortifications shown are Fort Brewerton [Fort Brtn], Niagara, Fort Ontario, Fort George, Sabbath Day Point [Sabidi Poent], Fort Ticonderoga [Ticondroga], Fort Crown Point, and Fort Royal.
The horn was cut down many years ago, but has a wonderful, even patina.
