Fine Quality Eighteenth Century European Hunting Sword/ Cuttoe in Overall Excellent Condition. Wide, slightly curved, 20.5" single edge blade with 4" false edge. The wide shallow fuller runs open from the hilt to the tip. Blade really excellent with just some scattered staining, a few tiny edge nicks, negligible, and a tiny chip broken from the tip, again negligible and not affecting value. Hilt with brass capstan, one piece ebony wood grip decorated with incised cross hatching and tiny brass tacks. Brass ferrule at the base with embossed decoration. The flat faced S shaped brass cross guard with engraved floral decoration on the obverse, including flower rosettes on each quillon. Entire hilt hear perfect with nice untouched patina. Back stitched leather scabbard missing the tip, the plain brass throat originally mounted a frog stud, now missing. The top 1" of the leather scabbard is broken / missing, but hidden by the throat and detracts little. Very nice eighteenth century short sword, probably either French or German.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
