    Description

Exquisite British Dolphin Head Officer's Hanger, Circa 1775. Logically used by a Naval officer. 32 1/2" overall with 26" curved blade marked "Harvey" on the obverse at the base, with unstopped central fuller running the entire length of the blade, and deep narrow fuller along the top edge ending at the 10 1/2" false edge. Blade really excellent with touches of luster, just one tiny patch of very light pitting and absolutely no nicks. Retains the original leather washer. The all brass hilt is exceptional. D- guard knuckle bow splits at the base forming inboard and outboard branches. The pommel is a massive, finely detailed, dolphin head with green semi precious stones inset as eyes. Exceptional detail and unique in our experience. The pommel utilizes a capstan. Hilt excellent with nice patina on the guard and the pommel retaining much of the original gilt. 4" ivory grip carved in tight spiral with gilt brass ferrule at the base. A couple of small chips where it meets the pommel and one age hairline on the reverse, but very sound with wonderful patina.

A most impressive sword and a very rare form, doubtless from the period of the American Revolution.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
