Description

Eighteenth Century English Officers' Cuttoe. 26" single edge blade with deep narrow fuller along the top, rudimentary ricasso. Blade with deep dark patina, some scattered nicks and the tip slightly rounded. Just a few scattered patches of very minor pitting. The convex brass pommel cap with capstan is notched at the side, but the sword was clearly fabricated without a knucklebow. Brass cross guard with four piercings, the quillons turned alternately up and down on each side. Again, clearly fabricated without provisions for any kind of knuckle guard. The tapered wood grip covered with sharkskin, of which 90% remains, along with 50% of the twisted brass wire wrap. Brass grip ferrule at the base. There is a very old crack on the left side of the grip with no loss, but noteworthy separation. The sword is overall completely untouched and marked at the base of the blade with a white painted museum accession number. Unusual form and a sword that could easily date to the period of the American Revolution.

    Estimate: $500 - $600.
