Early 18th Century .69 Caliber Smoothbore French Flintlock Infantry Musket. Despite considerable restoration, still a fascinating and rare example of a French musket from the first half of the 18th century. All metal generally smooth and light brown/gray. Just some light scattered surface rust with no pitting. The 44 1/2" barrel exhibits five ring turnings near the muzzle and is in the original flintlock configuration. The barrel bears no proofmarks. The massive lock, also in original flintlock configuration, is marked, in script, Charleville at the bottom with die stamped fleur de lis at the top. Double pointed trigger guard with the stud for the sling swivel removed. Iron sideplate and buttplate. The rear ramrod ferrule is unquestionably original The forestock has been restored from the midway point of the rear ferrule to within 2 1/2" of the muzzle. The band is from a Civil War .58 caliber musket, the ramrod and front ferrule also appear to be original. Just behind the splice on the right side of the forestock is a filled aperture that appears to have been for a band spring. The gun is mechanically fine with excellent markings. The original portion of the stock exhibits a smooth dark patina and is excellent. Deeply carved on the right side of the buttstock, and unquestionably period, "LeRoi" (The King) and exhibiting on the left side of the butt stock floral/scroll paint decoration that also appears to be period. A fascinating early musket worthy of competent restoration.
