Cased Pair of Late 18th Century British Dbl Bbl F/L Pistols. 12" overall with side by side 6¼" .58 cal. smoothbore round barrels. All iron mounted with the exception of the monogrammed silver wrist escutcheon. Barrels smooth and clean with just a few tiny spots of salt and peppering. Marked on the center rib "E. Bond 45 Cornhill London/ Gun Maker to the Honble E. I. Compy". Each lock also marked "E. Bond". Barrel tangs, locks, trigger guard, and butt cap all profusely engraved with leaves, scroll work, and arms panoplies. The trigger guard, with heavily engraved pineapple finial, retains 70% of the original bright blue. Finely figured walnut full stocks about mint with nice rich patina. Grips finely checkered. Locks with sliding safeties and roller frizzens retain the original brass tipped ebony ramrods, one fitted with a ball screw. Mechanically perfect, crisp markings, an exquisite pair of pistols. The casing, which actually appears to be American walnut, is certainly contemporary to the guns but, we believe, constructed and fitted after their date of manufacture. 11¼" x 16¾" x 4½" high. Brass bail handle with elaborate rosettes and locking mechanism, there is no key, green baize lining. The guns are case with bullet mold, screw driver, extra mainspring, oil bottle and extra flints. Casing about perfect, with just one loose partition, wood with rich patina and two minor hairlines on the lid, not affecting soundness. Possibly an American casing of a pair of British pistols. A most impressive pair of pistols for both quality and condition.
