Absolutely Exquisite French Small Sword, Circa 1760. 36¾" overall, including the capstan with a 30" blade, that is triangular in cross section with back fullers and a deep shallow fuller on the face. The blade is etched at the base in 3¾" panels with scroll work on a gilt panel incorporating, in French, the motto, "Do Not Draw Me Without Reason, Do Not Sheath Me Without Honor." Above the panel on both sides is a sun surrounded by an arms panoply. The blade is excellent, smooth and gray, retaining 90% of the original gilt. The all iron hilt is truly spectacular. The outboard decoration on the guard features a deep relief, and exquisitely executed, scene of a hound attacking geese amid foliage, with two hounds attacking a wolf, also amid foliage, on the other lobe. The decoration on the inboard face of the guard, executed in the same style, shows a hound and a goose on the one lobe, and an goat/ ram and two swans on the other, all amid foliage. The base of the hilt, mounting the pas d'anes, which are gilt edged, features a hound on one side and a wolf on the other, surrounded by scrolls amid foliage. The knucklebow displays birds and floral/ scroll motifs on both sides and terminates above the pas d'ane. It is rounded off with gilt scrolls at the edges and shows no signs of having been broken. The pommel exhibits a hound attacking a goat/ ram on the obverse and hounds attacking a goose on the reverse. The definition on all of this work is remarkable and approximates the finest sculpture of the period. The grip is covered with a double band of tightly woven silver wire, alternating with bands of sheet silver. Hilt overall about perfect condition, retaining 98% of the original gilt, the relief work with a pleasing dark patina showing absolutely no wear. There is no scabbard. A beautiful sword of exceptional quality.
