A Group of Four Reigart Revolutionary War Prison Relics. A 2 3/4" high 19th century glass bottle with cork top, containing an approx. 2" X 3/4" square piece of wood with ink script paper lable affixed to the front of the bottle, "Piece of the old Prison Ship Jersey Wallabout Bay Brooklyn 1780" Another, 3 1/4" high 19th century glass bottle with cork top, containing three 1" to 2" wood slivers with the same ink script paper lable affixed to the front. The HMS Jersey was a British prison ship that held about 8000 American prisoners, in horrendous conditions, through the course of the American Revolution. A 1/4" X 3" sliver of wood attached to a 2 1/4" square card to which is affixed a May 10, 1892 newspaper article reporting the "old sugar house at the corner of Duane and Rose Streets in this city which was a prison for the Revolutionary patriots of 1776 has been torn down within the last few days" A 10 1/2" long piece of wood, 3" wide at the base, tapering to 1", with an ink script paper tag affixed, "Old Sugar House at Rose Street New York City Built A. D. 1763" Also two other paper tags affixed with more detailed history of the prison, which housed American captives during the Revolutionary War. A fascinating and rare group.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
