18th Century Hand Forged American Spontoon. 11" leaf shaped blade with integrally forged 9 1/2" S shaped cross piece. Exceptionally fine quality workmanship with median ridge on both sections and obviously meant to be sharpened on all edges. Heavy 1 3/4" iron ferrule at the base. Retains 41" of the original 1" diameter wooden haft. The head is attached to the haft by means of a 1/4" iron pin passing though the haft and the tang, 1" below the iron ferrule. Completely untouched/uncleaned 'in the black' with light surface rust and some very small scattered areas of very light pitting.
A classic example of the type of polearms crafted by American blacksmiths to meet the exigencies of war during the American Revolution.
