18th Century British F/L Holster Pistol. 13½" overall with 7 7/8" .65 caliber smoothbore round brass barrel. Barrel exhibits three proof marks and decorative engraving at the breech. All brass furniture with decorative engraving including elaborate wrist escutcheon and intricate openwork side plate. Large grotesque mask butt cap. The lock is smooth and clean with decorative scroll engraving and maker W. Staples. The hammer, which is also engraved, appears to be slightly oversized and is possibly a period replacement. Wood excellent with just some normal handling marks and a number of small dents on the left side of the forestock, also one small sliver missing on the right side, obviously very old. Nicely relief carved with fan motif around and to the rear of the tang. A very pretty pistol that could benefit from a bit of touchup.
