    Description

1776 Edition of The Manual of Exercise, as Ordered by His Majesty in the Year 1764, Printed in Philadelphia. The fledgling Continental Army had few resources in either men or material upon its creation in 1775. The new army was in desperate need of standardized training and the only readily available instructional resources came from English sources. This instruction manual was pirated from an English edition and sold by J. Humphreys, R. Bell, and R. Aitken of Philadelphia. It contains 35 pages of "Plans and Explanations of the Method generally Practiced at Reviews and Field-Days", including a list of words of command. There are two rather wrinkled copper plate diagrams bound at the rear of the manual, one of which is detached. There is an inscription dated July 20, 1818 on the last page which reads, in part: "Meredith H. Watkins/ ...steal not this book for fear/ of shame for look above and/ you find the owners name". The original covers are not present and there is damp staining and moderate foxing present throughout, however this is an important manual, which would have no doubt been the standard reference used by both the British and American armies as they faced each other in the Revolutionary War.
