[Revolutionary War] 1776 Receipt for "four guns or fire arms with bayonets and scabbards". One page, 8.5" x 5", Coventry [Rhode Island], July 18, 1776. This beautifully preserved and legible document meticulously describes the purchase of firearms for the colony of Rhode Island. It reads in part: "Received of Joseph Salcott & Jeremiah Quigley Select men of the town of Coventry four Guns or fire arms with bayonets and scabbards Said bayonets said arms purchased by said Selectmen for this Colony & Approved by Persons under Oath Agreeable to Law at the following prices...Said fire arms for the use of a number of men belonging to Said Coventry late enlisted as Soldiers to serve their country in a Military Company under the Command of Capt. James Dena(?)...". The receipt is endorsed on the verso by Joseph Hale as commander of D Company. The document is toned with old smoothed creases, otherwise it is in fine condition.
