"Mad Anthony" Wayne: Silhouette on Glass Wall Plaque. Silhouette on glass marked "Anthony Wayne 1790" (2.75" x 3.25") mounted within a 5" x 6.25" ebonized wood plaque with brass acorn hanger affixed to the top. He is pictured half-length facing left wearing a military decoration. The title, jacket, ruffled shirt and wig are highlighted in gold. The original paper label on the back side reads: "Anthony Wayne Pennsylvania. American Soldier's Commander in Chief U.S." The wood has a slight curve to it, commensurate with age. It does not appear to have ever been tampered with. The cataloger first remembers seeing it 43 years ago in the private collection of a New York City Americana dealer. One story about "Mad Anthony" that you are unlikely to have heard is related by our own Tom Slater. His ancestors lived in Pennsylvania. One day, Wayne and his troops rode by the family homestead. A little girl, a family member, attracted the general's attention. He stopped there long enough to give that little girl a ride on his horse. That was probably the highlight of her life.
